Most people with pain in their mouth or face will visit a dentist for relief. Generally, the dentist will find a cause for the pain and treat it.
But in some cases the dentist may not find a cause for the pain. The examination and x-rays look normal. Such cases are then referred to an orofacial pain consultant.
These pains may be referred from a muscle, a nerve or even a headache. Orofacial pain may be caused by non-dental pain disorders that can present as pain in your teeth, mouth or face.
Orofacial pain is a field that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of non-dental pain that presents in the head, face, neck or mouth.
